Thrift Store Furniture Annex Wins Community Support and Also Honors "Year of the Dragon"

2012 is the Year of the Dragon in Chinese astrology. It signifies a year ahead full of success and happiness. The Shelter On The Hill Thrift Store's new furniture annex occupies space in what used to be the Mountain Institute of Kung Fu and Tai Chi's "dojo". A dojo is a place of learning, quite often as it relates to the martial arts, is considered special and is well cared for out of respect by its users.

On one of the walls of that space now occupied by our new furniture annex is painted a beautiful Dragon which was painted many years ago by mother and daughter artists Amber and Claire Merrill. It was too beautiful to paint over when Dragon Image we moved in, so now it is a permanent fixture. The new furniture annex has been met with delight and great approval by customers both new and old. Since it's official opening this past August 1st, the furniture inventory continues to come in and it changes almost daily.

And what a nice variety of things we have! There are all sorts of chairs and tables, dressers and desks, couches and end tables and lamps, beds and frames, televisions, electronics and objects d'art for your walls. You just never know what you will find at any one time.

Customers come in to find great deals on things they both need and also to look for that special treasure; things they didn't know they just couldn't live without!

It is the support from the community, by virtue of donations and the volunteers who commit their time, that enables us to thrive. And we are always looking for ways to improve our customers' shopping experience. In the works right now is a plan for a redesigning of the store layout which will make for a much nicer flow and shopping experience. And just recently, as if by magic, something we had been hoping for to improve our clothing department was just dropped into our laps! Donated by long-time thrift store supporter, Ron Hurst, was 30 feet of wall-mounted double-rod racks. Fantastic! We can hardly wait to have them installed. And a big thank you once again, Ron!

The Thrift Store is our greatest source of income. The two things we need most for the Thrift Store are donations of saleable items and volunteers. If you have items that you wish to donate, please call the store or drop by when it is open. Please do not leave items at the front or back doors. This is a violation of county ordinance and could cause us to be fined. If you would like to volunteer to work at the store, we want to talk to you! Please call and speak with the store manager. Even if you can only work a couple of hours one day a week, we would love to have you help us help build our shelter.

So if you have not been into the store recently, you are in for a treat. Come on by and take a look at our beautiful Dragon in the new furniture annex. Clean out your closets and cupboards and donate anything you are no longer using - it's for the animals! And don't forget: Members of Shelter On The Hill always get a 10% discount.

May the Dragon be with you!
